OLONGAPO CITY–Candidates for congressman, mayor, vice mayor, and councilors in this city signed a covenant for peace in a bid to ensure an honest, orderly, and peaceful on Friday.
In a ceremony held inside the St. Joseph Parish church, Zambales First District congressional candidates Olongapo City Mayor James Gordon, Jr., former Subic town mayor Jeffrey Khonghun, and former Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) director Jesus Vicente Magsaysay II were seated at the first row of church pews.
Olongapo City mayoralty aspirants Councilor Bugsy Delos Reyes, Vice Mayor Rolen Paulino and former SBMA director Anne Marie Gordon shared the second row.
“I believe that the best way to start the election period is through this kind of an activity. A peace covenant where all stakeholders gather together for one objective, that is to have a peaceful conduct of election in the city,” Dictador Untayao, Commission on Elections (Comelec) officer said.
The covenant signing was organized by the Social Action Center of Zambales, the Olongapo City Police Office, Namfrel, Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and Department of Education (DepEd).
Police Senior Superintendent Jose Hidalgo, Jr. also urged the candidates to observe the Comelec rules and regulation on the conduct of the 2013 elections.
“The covenant, designed by our stakeholders coming from different sectors of the society, political leaders, and public officials, upholds the principle of democracy,” Hidalgo explained.
In an interview, Untayao said that while the covenant prescribes no punishment, “it is a show of commitment from the candidate.” ●Butch Gunio
